I won a wheelthrowing award

I was totally thrilled to be awarded the 2024 Cesco wheel throwing award at the Canberra Potters Society. What an awesome award!

‘City of gold’, my award winning piece

Yes, believe it or not this is primarily a wheel thrown piece. I started by throwing a large porcelain cylinder, which I altered and deformed while it was still wet on the wheel. I had a lot of fun then altering it a bit more by pulling it off the wheeled in all its floppy glory.

Once it firmed up a little, it received a new base. The handle came much later, pulled as a long strap (in my apartment bathroom).

After five and a half days in the big anagama style wood kiln at Old Saint Lukes Studio in Gundaroo, it was a bit matte for my liking. So it went through another glaze firing which melted some of the fly ash from the woodfire and gave it a nice gloss. Finally some gold lustre, a fourth firing, and I declared it done.

Big thanks to the Canberra Potters Society for this award. I have put the prize to good use at Walker Ceramics with some bags of porcelain and so the cycle continues.
