Daily life more alive

Unique handmade ceramics

ABOUT EMILY

My dream is to make daily life more alive, by creating unique hand crafted ceramics that connect us to each other.

My work is primarily high fired porcelain and stoneware, focussing on functional wood fired pieces.

I am based on Ngunnawal Country in Canberra.

EMILY’S PROCESS

Bringing together earth, water and fire

I generally start by wheel throwing porcelain or stoneware clay. Many of my pieces are then hand carved or stamped. This creates dynamic surfaces for glazes and flame to play with.

I glaze my works with slips and glazes made by master potter Ian Jones. Some pieces are left unglazed, to allow a natural patina or wood ash glaze to develop during firing.

Whenever possible, I wood-fire my pots in one of the kilns at Old Saint Lukes Studio in Gundaroo. This takes between a day and over a week. Other kilns include Ian Jones’ new biodiesel (waste cooking oil) kiln.
